2024 in Review: Building Australia’s Digital Future, One Milestone at a Time | Macquarie Data Centres

2024 was a major year here for us at Macquarie Data Centres. We made a meaningful impact on the industries and communities we serve. This past year was all about building for tomorrow— through starting construction on Australia’s first purpose-built AI and cloud data centre, continuing our operational excellence and exceptional safety record.

Here’s a look at our top 10 milestones that defined 2024:

1. Under Construction

Australia’s first purpose-built AI and cloud data centre, IC3 Super West. With all early works complete, we installed over 287 piles, two massive tower cranes with a combined total load of 100 tonnes and completed first shear walls and precast columns. Our hybrid air and liquid cooled facility is on track to be ready for service in mid 2026.

2. Safety Record

Our employees and contractors worked 250,000+ hours with zero Lost Time Injuries (LTIs) and zero Medical Treatment Injuries (MTIs). This includes data centre operations, upgrades, new builds and administration.

3. Workplace Awards

We won the 2024 Gallup Exceptional Workplace Award and the Strengths-based Culture Award! International recognition for thriving workplaces, awarded to organisations with outstanding levels of employee satisfaction and engagement.

4. Operational Excellence

We upheld our outstanding operational track record for the 24th year in a row, continuing our streak for the longest running facility uptime record in Sydney.

5. Giving back

We raised significant funds that helped over 1,000 children in Sydney’s north zone improve their literacy through our long-time charity partner United Way, whose impactful community-based programs educate and empower Aussie kids. Our team hosted data centre tours and volunteered for resume and interview training with high school students through United Ways.

6. Continued Profit Growth

Macquarie Technology Group, our parent company, reported their 10th consecutive year of profit growth alongside in our FY24 Financial Report.

7. Sovereign Credentials

We acquired the land and buildings at our Macquarie Park Data Centre Campus, a strategic acquisition which further strengthens our sovereign credentials and allows us to provide more future-proofed, Australian owned capacity in Sydney’s North Zone.

8. Welcomed Ministers

The Federal Minister for Home Affairs and Cyber Security attended the Ground Breaking Ceremony for IC3 Super West, and spoke to the importance of sovereign data centres in securing Australia’s AI and cloud driven future. We also had visits from the Treasurer, the Minister for Communications, the Minister for Industry, Science and Resources, the Assistant Minister for Future Made in Australia, and the Prime Minister in 2024.

9. Sustainability Awards

We were awarded a silver medal in the globally recognised EcoVadis Sustainability Assessment, for our commitment to the environment, labour and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement practices.

10. Customer Experience

We upheld our stellar customer experience with a Net Promoter Score of +89, underscoring our commitment to going above and beyond for our customers.

As we close the chapter on a successful 2024, our team is already looking ahead to 2025. We’re ready to go even bigger. Next year we will continue to execute our expansion plans that will bring more AI and cloud capacity for our customers now and into the future.

Big things coming. Watch this space.
